If there was one thing I wish I’d known…
If there was one thing I wish I’d known before motherhood it would be…
To let go of expectations and the plan.
Maybe there was a reason the hypnobirthing book was written by a man.
I was ready have the perfect birth.
But let’s be honest most of us are high on drugs believing the doctor to be Colin Firth.
I had it all planned: fairy lights, candles, relaxing music, a contraction should be known as a surge.
But quickly plans were scuppered and something else would emerge.
The consultant said a section would be a good idea.
For various reasons, one being the baby’s head was rather big, so I was filled with fear.
So the two sides of A4 were quickly torn.
But would this actually matter after the baby was born?
Yes, I never got my water birth.
But I think all births are equal in their worth.
Once the baby was born we had issues with feeding.
My milk was late; he cried a lot. More milk he was needing.
We got readmitted as he had lost too much weight.
I felt like a rubbish mother. Should I resign myself to this fate?
Again, I had to let go of the plan.
In the Conquest, sweating buckets, really needing a fan.
I started combi feeding.
Maybe this was the perfect recipe my little boy was needing.
Sometimes using a bottle
Unleashed a guilt inside me at full throttle.
But I say to you as fellow mothers, “let’s go with the flow
And this image of the perfect mother has to go!
We are all doing our very best often on not much rest
So let’s start to be more proud
And sing we are all amazing mothers aloud!”
