Confessions of a Chocoholic

Chocolate: such an evocative and addictive substance. A force to be reckoned with. Like gravity she pulls me in and I cannot repel her. Magnetic, dark, alluring, wanton for her and I am simply too weak to resist.

Spring – Easter. She is everywhere, on shelves in every format. From billboards to supermarkets, she is saying, “come closer, I won’t bite”. She is right, she won’t bite but I will. She is so tempting that I even have to lock her away in a cupboard and only my other half has the key. But she in hushed tones that are quiet but forceful in nature calls to me: telling me I am here what harm can one tiny little bite do? I give in powerless to resist, the key in the usual place wasn’t hard to find. A turn in the lock and she shall be mine. Just one small square and I will stop this time.

The sugar high and rush of endorphins hit me and for a moment my bones, which feel exhausted and hollow to their core, are recalibrated. Who was I kidding? I will never stop with one piece. She calls to me again urgently telling me I must finish her immediately. I reason with myself for a moment, convincing myself that if I consume all the evidenced quickly then it never existed. The crime scene has been erased, the crumbs from my partner’s egg swept away, discarded, never there. But what to do with the shiny, purple foil wrapper? I consider eating it but quickly decide against it.

Maybe I could reform the shape of the egg and stuff it with something and he wouldn’t realise for a while it was missing inside. Just like I successfully did one year with the Christmas tree chocolates. I decide to eliminate any last scraps of evidence and be a responsible human being and recycle it.

Maybe the foil will be made into something important and needed so really I had done a good thing? The earth’s metal resources were precious and not infinite in supply after all. Yes, I must tell myself this.

Now where to replace the egg before my partner finds out? I know the cycle will continue. I hatch a masterplan to break the cycle. I will buy two eggs this time, one for me and one for my partner. Only to make sure I don’t devour both, I will lock his in the boot of his car immediately and he must consume it straight away that day. Or better still that hour or minute!
